Looking to the past to inform the future is essential when attempting to grapple with the complex social and natural resource problems that our society faces today. Humanity’s relationship with natural resources shapes landscapes, leaving enduring legacies of individuals’ and communities’ lived experience. Emerging technologies and proactive decision making hold the promise of allowing us to leave behind landscapes that are are healthier, more diverse, and more connected than those we inherited. For this to happen, cutting-edge interdisciplinary science is needed.
